Can the energy dependence of elliptic flow reveal the QGP phase transition?

چکیده

Ideal hydrodynamic simulations are performed to compute the evolution with collision energy of hadron spectra and elliptic flow between AGS and LHC energies. We argue that viscous effects should decrease with increasing energy, improving the applicability of ideal fluid dynamics at higher energies. We show that the increasing radial flow at higher energies pushes the elliptic flow to larger transverse momenta, leading to a peaking and subsequent decrease of the elliptic flow at fixed pT with increasing collision energy, independent of whether or not there is a phase transition in the equation of state.

Disappearance of Elliptic Flow: A New Probe for the Nuclear Equation of State

Using a relativistic hadron transport model, we investigate the utility of the elliptic flow excitation function as a probe for the stiffness of nuclear matter and for the onset of a possible quark-gluon-plasma (QGP) phasetransition at AGS energies 1 ∼ EBeam ∼ 11 AGeV. The excitation function shows a strong dependence on the nuclear equation of state, and exhibits characteristic signatures whic...

Flow at the SPS and RHIC as a quark-gluon plasma signature.

Radial and elliptic flow in noncentral heavy-ion collisions can constrain the effective equation of state (EOS) of the excited nuclear matter. To this end, a model combining relativistic hydrodynamics and a hadronic transport code [Sorge, Phys. Rev. C 52, 3291 (1995)] is developed. For an EOS with a first-order phase transition, the model reproduces both the radial and elliptic flow data at the...

Elliptic Flow at Finite Shear Viscosity in a Kinetic Approach at RHIC

Within a covariant parton cascade, we discuss the impact of both finite shear viscosity η and freeze-out dynamics on the elliptic flow generated at RHIC. We find that the enhancement of η/s in the cross-over region of the QGP phase transition cannot be neglected in order to extract the information from the QGP phase. We also point out that the elliptic flow v2(pT ) for a fluid at η/s ∼ 0.1− 0.2...

What can we learn from hydrodynamic analysis of elliptic flow ? ∗

Recently, physicists at Brookhaven National Laboratory made an announcement that “RHIC serves the perfect liquid” [ 1]. The agreement of hydrodynamic predictions [ 2] of integrated and differential elliptic flow and radial flow patterns with Au+Au data at RHIC energies [ 3, 4, 5, 6] is one of the main lines of the announcement. We first study the sensitivity of this conclusion to different hydr...

Mach Cones and Hydrodynamic Flow : Probing Big Bang Matter in the Laboratory

A critical discussion of the present signals for the phase transition to quark-gluon plasma (QGP) is given. Since hadronic rescattering models predict much larger flow than observed from 1 to 50 A GeV laboratory bombarding energies, this observation is interpreted as potential evidence for a first-order phase transition at high baryon density. A detailed discussion of the collective flow as a b...
